SAN ANTONIO, Texas — San Antonio will observe its annual Good Friday tradition on April 18 with a live reenactment of the Passion of the Christ in the city’s downtown area.

The public event, depicting the trial, crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ, has been a local tradition since 1983 and is expected to draw hundreds of participants and spectators.

The day’s observance will begin with a bilingual prayer service at Milam Park at 9:30 a.m. The Passion Play will start at 10 a.m., following Jesus’ path to crucifixion. The procession will move through downtown streets, concluding at the historic San Fernando Cathedral at Main Plaza.

Participants will wear period costumes and use realistic props to portray the events, remaining faithful to biblical accounts. Volunteers from church communities throughout San Antonio will take on roles such as Roman soldiers, disciples, and other figures central to the Passion narrative.

San Fernando Cathedral, established in 1731, holds deep significance for the city’s Catholic community. Its presence as the final point of the procession adds solemnity to the observance and serves as a space for reflection and prayer.

The reenactment serves both as a religious ceremony and a cultural tradition. Organizers emphasize its importance in preserving the city’s heritage and bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds in shared reflection.

Public safety measures will be in place during the event. The city will enforce road closures along the procession route, and attendees are advised to plan for potential detours and increased foot traffic downtown.

Local news stations will provide live coverage of the event. Online platforms will also share updates and footage, allowing wider access to those unable to attend in person.

Now in its 40th year, the Passion Play continues to stand as a major event in San Antonio’s Holy Week observances, uniting the community in commemoration of Good Friday and the broader Christian tradition.
