The Texas Department of State Health Services announced on April 4, 2025, that a measles outbreak has expanded, now impacting five additional counties and bringing the total number of cases to 481. This significant outbreak has resulted in 56 hospitalizations and one fatality, tragically involving an unvaccinated school-aged child.

Health authorities report that the South Plains and Panhandle regions of Texas are primarily affected. State officials express concern about the potential for further spread and underscore the critical importance of vaccination as a preventive measure.

The Texas Department of State Health Services is actively encouraging residents to receive vaccinations, emphasizing the department’s ongoing vigilance in monitoring and managing the outbreak. It provides comprehensive resources and information to help residents understand the importance of vaccination and stay informed about the outbreak’s status.

Gaines County has been identified as the epicenter, with substantial case numbers, contributing to a total of 19 counties now affected. State health officials are collaborating with local health departments to contain the outbreak effectively and ensure public safety.

Officials stress the urgent need for community awareness and proactive action to prevent additional cases. This outbreak is part of a broader national trend of increasing measles cases, highlighting the necessity of vaccination to combat this highly contagious viral disease.

The Texas Department of State Health Services remains committed to transparency and continues to update the public on developments. The department urges eligible individuals to get vaccinated promptly.

Public health officials are conducting thorough investigations to trace contacts and prevent further transmission of the virus. Educational campaigns are underway to raise awareness about the benefits of vaccination and how to access it.

Local communities are encouraged to support vaccination drives and public health initiatives actively. Texas health officials are closely coordinating with federal agencies and neighboring states to manage the outbreak response effectively.

Health experts emphasize the important role of parents and guardians in ensuring timely vaccinations for children. Emergency response plans are in place to address the challenges posed by the outbreak, and state healthcare facilities are prepared to handle additional measles cases.

Efforts to educate the public about measles symptoms and preventive measures are ongoing as part of the strategic response. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and consult with their healthcare providers regarding vaccination status and measles risks.

The Department of State Health Services reaffirms its commitment to clear communication and transparency with the public. Texas officials recognize the complex logistics involved in outbreak management and remain proactive in their approach. Community involvement and cooperation are deemed essential for successfully resolving this public health challenge.
