AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities in Austin have detained a California resident on charges related to a cryptocurrency scam that targeted an elderly homeowner in Texas.

The 25-year-old suspect, Chaopeng Huang of San Lorenzo, California, was apprehended after law enforcement uncovered the scheme, which involved tricking the elderly Texas resident into transferring a significant amount of cryptocurrency to the perpetrator’s account.

Texas authorities worked closely with their counterparts in California to track and capture the suspect.

The investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly used sophisticated methods to deceive the victim, including impersonation and technical manipulation of cryptocurrency transactions.

It is believed that the accused established contact with the victim through digital communication, posing as a legitimate entity offering assistance with digital asset management.

Authorities are urging the public to be cautious when engaging in cryptocurrency transactions and to verify the legitimacy of any online communications related to digital currency investments or management.

The arrest serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of financial scams and the importance of staying informed about potential threats.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a statement advising citizens to report any suspicious activities related to cryptocurrency transactions.

They stressed that educating oneself about the technology and its risks is essential in preventing such scams.

The suspect is expected to face charges related to fraud and attempted theft in connection with the scam.
