Intuitive Machines, a private company in Houston, confirmed that its lunar lander, Athena, failed to land on the moon as planned.

The lander missed its target location by over 800 feet and ended up in a cold, shadowy crater, ending the mission.

Athena was part of Intuitive Machines’ effort to establish itself in space exploration. The mission aimed to conduct scientific research on the lunar surface, but the landing did not go as expected.

Company leaders expressed disappointment but recognized the challenges involved in landing on the moon. They acknowledged that small errors in calculations can lead to significant deviations in landing accuracy.

Intuitive Machines is one of many private companies entering space exploration, with efforts that align with NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon.

Intuitive Machines has not yet set a timeline for its next lunar landing but will likely reassess its strategies before making another attempt.
