WASHINGTON, D.C. — Pete Hegseth has been confirmed as the United States Secretary of Defense following a tie-breaking vote by Vice President JD Vance.

The confirmation, which came after a closely contested Senate vote, marks an unusual situation where a Cabinet nominee required such a narrow margin for approval.

Hegseth, a former supporter of former President Donald Trump, faced significant opposition during his confirmation process.

Senators debated his past conduct and controversial statements, which some critics argued could affect his ability to lead the Department of Defense effectively. Despite the challenges, President Trump nominated Hegseth, citing his qualifications and leadership abilities.

The Senate vote ended in a deadlock, prompting Vice President Vance to cast the deciding vote. The decision highlighted the divided opinions among senators regarding Hegseth’s suitability for the role of Defense Secretary.

Supporters of Hegseth emphasized his military experience and leadership skills, noting his background as a veteran and his understanding of military operations.

They argued that his appointment would help strengthen national security efforts and align with the administration’s defense policies.
