Houston Independent School District (HISD) will introduce new weapons detectors in high schools where firearms have been discovered, aiming to improve campus security.
The decision comes after several incidents involving firearms on school grounds.
Superintendent Mike Miles stated that the new detectors will be less invasive and offer faster screening compared to traditional metal detectors.
The detectors are designed to detect weapons more efficiently, allowing students to pass through with minimal disruption.
HISD officials emphasize the importance of proactively addressing safety concerns while maintaining a secure learning environment. The district aims to respect student privacy and minimize inconvenience while enhancing security.
School safety officers and administrators have been trained on the new system, and the district is working with local law enforcement to ensure a smooth implementation.
The detectors will be in place at the start of the next academic term, and HISD plans to monitor their effectiveness and gather feedback from students, parents, and staff.
