The United States Supreme Court has rejected former President Donald Trump’s request to postpone his sentencing in a New York hush money case, allowing the legal proceedings to move forward as scheduled.
The case involves allegations that hush money payments were made during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence claims that could have influenced the election.
Prosecutors argue these payments were intended to conceal alleged past misconduct and prevent damaging information from becoming public.
Trump’s legal team had argued for a delay, citing potential interference with his political career and preparations for a possible 2024 presidential campaign.
They contended that proceeding with sentencing would hinder Trump’s ability to fulfill political obligations. Lower courts in New York, however, denied the request, prompting Trump’s attorneys to appeal to the Supreme Court.
With the Court’s decision, Judge Juan M. Merchan is now clear to proceed with sentencing, which remains scheduled for Friday.
