WASHINGTON, D.C. –The U.S. Senate confirmed Benjamin Cheeks to a federal judgeship this week, marking the 234th judicial confirmation under President Biden’s administration.

This achievement ties the number of judges confirmed during Biden’s tenure with that of former President Donald Trump at the same point in their presidencies.

Cheeks’ confirmation is seen as another step in the Democratic-controlled Senate’s effort to shape the judiciary.

With a focus on appointing judges who align with progressive values, the White House has steadily built its judicial legacy.

This pace mirrors that of Trump’s administration, which also left an imprint on the federal bench with its selection of judges during its term.

During his presidency, Trump was known for his rapid confirmation of conservative judges, with significant influence over the ideological balance of the courts.

Many of Trump’s appointees are relatively young, auguring a potentially lasting impact on U.S. judiciary interpretations on a range of issues.

Biden has sought to balance the conservative-leaning judiciary appointed by Trump.

In seeking confirmations, Biden’s administration has prioritized not just judicial philosophy but also diversity relating to gender, ethnicity, and professional background.

Historically marginalized groups such as women and minorities have seen increased representation under Biden’s nominees.
