Kobayashi went missing on November 8, after arriving at LAX and not boarding her scheduled connecting flight to New York. She was reportedly visiting family in New York, but instead of continuing her journey, she stayed in Los Angeles. Her family began the search after she did not arrive in New York and was last seen on November 11 at LAX.
TMZ reported that Kobayashi reassured her family about her safety during a phone call. Details about her whereabouts during her absence remain undisclosed.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell announced that Kobayashi was seen on video crossing the border into Mexico on November 12.
Police stated that she voluntarily traveled to Mexico, with no signs of foul play. She was seen with her luggage and appeared unharmed. The investigation revealed that she may have wanted to disconnect from modern technology, and she likely did not take her phone with her.
Chief McDonnell emphasized that the police did not find evidence of any crime. The family had initially pushed for the release of the video showing her crossing the border, but police confirmed her voluntary departure.
