FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida — Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi has been awarded the Major League Soccer (MLS) Most Valuable Player (MVP) for 2024.
Messi, who joined Inter Miami CF in July 2023, continued his impactful performance this season despite missing 15 out of the 34 games.
The accolade was unexpected for the soccer star, as the event was orchestrated secretly.
Over 250 Inter Miami academy players gathered on the field, eagerly waiting for Messi’s appearance. They formed the letters “MVP,” emphasizing the special moment.
This prestigious award is named after Landon Donovan, a notable figure in American soccer history.
Messi is the fifth Argentine to secure this recognition, following the footsteps of notable players like Luciano Acosta and Diego Valeri. He scored 20 goals and made 16 assists, setting him apart from his peers.
The voting process for the MLS MVP involves a poll consisting of players, club technical staff, and media representatives.
Messi led the voting with an average of 38.43%, surpassing other top players like Christian Benteke, who finished second with 33.70%.
The MVP award adds another trophy to Messi’s illustrious career, further solidifying his status as one of the greatest soccer players of all time.
