The Far Eastern University Cheering Squad faced criticism after unexpectedly securing a bronze medal at the 2024 UAAP Cheerdance Competition in Manila, Philippines, for their “Frozen”-themed routine that included several errors, surprising many including their coach, Randell San Gregorio.

San Gregorio openly acknowledged his surprise regarding the team’s placement in the competition. During a post-event interview, he admitted the performance was not up to their usual standard due to the mistakes made throughout their routine. Many spectators and critics had anticipated a lower ranking following what they observed as a less-than-perfect showcase of their abilities.

This isn’t the first time the FEU Cheering Squad has found itself in the spotlight for its performance. The team had previously claimed the top spot in the last year’s competition, setting high expectations for this year’s event. Their decision to embrace a “Frozen” theme was seen as an ambitious choice, aimed at capitalizing on the widespread popularity of the Disney franchise. The routine aimed to encapsulate the spirit and energy of the animated film, with intricate formations and creative choreography.

Feedback from judges and viewers alike centered on the technical mistakes observed during the performance. Observers noted issues with synchronization and a few stunt mishaps that were visible even to the untrained eye. Despite these setbacks, the FEU squad was praised for its creativity and overall performance energy. The judges’ decision to award them the bronze medal sparked considerable discussion and debate among fans and analysts of the sport.

The UAAP Cheerdance Competition is a prestigious event, known for its highly competitive nature, drawing participants from various universities across the country. Each year, cheerleading squads put significant effort into crafting routines that are not only technically sound but also engaging and entertaining. The pressure to excel is immense, with teams often spending months in preparation, honing their skills to perfection.

Coach San Gregorio, while surprised by the result, expressed pride in his team’s ability to complete the performance amidst the challenges. He acknowledged the dedication and hard work that the squad had put in leading up to the competition. He emphasized that the experience was a learning opportunity for both him and the team, indicating that they would use the feedback constructively to improve future performances.
