ICC seeks public evidence vs Duterte

MANILA, Philippines –The International Criminal Court (ICC) has intensified its efforts to gather evidence against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte concerning alleged crimes during his controversial war on drugs.

Officials have announced a renewed push to collect testimonies and additional evidence that could expedite the ongoing investigation.

The ICC’s interest in the case is rooted in accusations that Duterte’s campaign, which began in 2016, resulted in widespread human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings.

ICC-accredited counsel Kristina Conti stated that the court is actively seeking new potential witnesses who can provide firsthand accounts of the alleged atrocities.

The investigation centers on claims that Duterte’s anti-drug operations led to thousands of deaths, with many victims reportedly being killed without due process.

Duterte has consistently denied these accusations, maintaining that his administration’s actions were part of a legitimate campaign against illegal drugs.

The push for more evidence comes as public interest in the matter remains high.

In recent months, the case has gained international attention, with human rights organizations urging the ICC to continue its probe. These groups argue that the alleged violations during Duterte’s presidency should not go unpunished and that justice must be served for the victims and their families.

Reports indicate that the ICC’s investigation has faced several hurdles, including resistance from the current Philippine administration.

In the past, the Philippines has challenged the court’s jurisdiction over the matter, arguing that the country is capable of conducting its own investigation. However, the ICC maintains that it has the authority to intervene when a country is unwilling or unable to do so.

The ICC’s investigation into Duterte’s drug war has been a subject of debate both domestically and internationally.

Supporters of Duterte argue that his tough stance on drugs was necessary to combat an escalating crisis. They claim that the campaign effectively reduced crime and improved public safety.

Critics, however, contend that the crackdown resulted in massive human rights violations and the loss of innocent lives.
