AUSTIN, Texas – Authorities in Southeast Austin are investigating a deadly hit-and-run incident that occurred on October 30, 2023. A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Montopolis Drive and Crumley Lane. The Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) reported that the accident took place around 6:30 p.m.

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency medical personnel found the pedestrian deceased. Details about the identity of the victim have not been released pending notification of next of kin. Law enforcement is actively seeking the driver involved in this incident as they fled the scene immediately after the collision.

Eyewitnesses provided accounts that are aiding police in reconstructing the accident’s events. Initial reports indicate that the pedestrian was crossing the street when a vehicle, described by witnesses as a dark-colored sedan, approached at high speed and struck the individual. The driver did not stop and continued traveling southbound on Montopolis Drive.

The Austin Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding this case to come forward. They are particularly interested in any possible video footage from nearby businesses or residential security systems that could provide critical leads. The department has emphasized the importance of community assistance in solving hit-and-run cases that leave victims and their families without closure.

This fatality marks the latest in a series of traffic incidents in Austin this year, contributing to an increasing toll of pedestrian-related fatalities. Authorities are advising pedestrians to exercise caution and remain aware of their surroundings, particularly in areas with busy traffic.

Austin residents have expressed concerns about traffic safety, especially in rapidly developing areas of the city. Residents in the Montopolis neighborhood, where the accident occurred, have been vocal about the need for enhanced safety measures. Suggestions include better street lighting, pedestrian crosswalk signals, and speed reduction initiatives.

In response, city officials have been assessing traffic flow and safety in neighborhoods like Montopolis. They are considering implementing additional measures to improve pedestrian safety and reduce the likelihood of similar incidents. These measures might include increasing the presence of law enforcement, conducting speed checks, and launching public awareness campaigns about the dangers of reckless driving and jaywalking.
