WEBB COUNTY, Texas – Officials have arrested a man in connection with the discovery of migrants concealed inside a truck-tractor’s gas tank. The man identified as Gonzalo Rico Jr., 47, a resident of Laredo, Texas, now faces charges related to people smuggling. The arrest took place after a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 35.

During the routine stop, the DPS trooper noticed unusual modifications to the truck-tractor. The trooper decided to investigate further, suspecting possible involvement in illegal activities. Upon inspection, the trooper found two individuals hidden inside the gas tank of the commercial vehicle. The method of concealment raised questions about the risks and potential dangers to the individuals inside the tank.

Law enforcement sources stated that such concealment attempts are not common. They pose significant risks to the well-being of those being transported. Officials highlighted that the gas tank’s design does not provide safe conditions for human occupancy, raising concerns about the safety of those hidden inside.

The individuals found in the gas tank have been identified as migrants attempting to enter the United States illegally. Authorities have not disclosed further information about their identities, aiming to protect their privacy during the ongoing investigation.

Gonzalo Rico Jr. has been charged with two felony counts of smuggling persons, a serious offense under Texas law. The charges reflect the gravity of the situation, as smuggling carries severe penalties due to the inherent risks to human life and national security.

The discovery has brought attention to the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing illegal immigration and human smuggling along the southern border. The case highlights the lengths to which individuals will go to evade detection and enter the country.

The DPS continues to investigate the matter, working to determine if Gonzalo Rico Jr. acted alone or if a larger smuggling network is involved. Authorities seek to identify any connections to organized crime, which often plays a significant role in facilitating such operations.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been notified and is collaborating with local agencies on the investigation. The involvement of federal authorities underscores the importance of addressing cross-border smuggling as a priority for national security.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Gonzalo Rico Jr. remains in custody. He is awaiting further judicial action. The case’s outcome will depend on the evidence presented and the court’s judgment on the charges levied against him.
