MANILA, Philippines — Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo qualified for three apparatus finals and the team event at the 2026 Asian Games after the men’s artistic gymnastics qualification round Monday in Nagoya, Japan.
Yulo advanced to the floor exercise, parallel bars and vault finals despite a shaky qualification performance.
His younger brother, Karl Eldrew Yulo, also reached two apparatus finals — floor exercise and horizontal bar — and qualified for the team final.
Carlos topped the floor exercise qualification with 14.600 points. He placed sixth in parallel bars with 14.266 and seventh in vault with 13.649 after stumbling during his first attempt.
“It didn’t turn out the way I wanted in preparation, but I also learned a lot that I can carry with me in the coming days,” Carlos said in Filipino after recovering on his second vault attempt.
Carlos finished 13th in rings with 13.500 points, 24th in horizontal bar with 11.700 and 40th in pommel horse with 8.233.
Karl Eldrew posted 13.966 in floor exercise to rank fourth and scored 13.433 in horizontal bar to place ninth.
Carlos said he remains proud of his younger brother and acknowledged Karl Eldrew’s ability on the horizontal bar.
“I can’t do what he does on the high bar. I ask him about how it feels and about the technique,” Carlos said.
Miguel Besana also qualified for the vault final after placing fourth with 13.933 points. Besana won the vault gold medal at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games.
Team Philippines, which also includes Zachary Nunez and Ace de Leon, qualified sixth for the men’s team final with 232.093 points.
“There’s still the finals, so we still have a chance to win a medal,” Carlos said.
The men’s team final will take place Sept. 23, followed by the floor exercise final Sept. 24. The vault, horizontal bar and parallel bars finals will take place Sept. 25.
China’s Boheng Zhang led the all-around qualification with 85.065 points, followed by Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka with 84.698 and Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto with 83.865.
