WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he plans to establish an “AI Force” and appoint a new “AI czar” as his administration seeks to accelerate artificial intelligence development in the United States.

Trump made the announcement in a lengthy Truth Social post, comparing the proposed AI Force to the Space Force, which he established during his first term. He did not provide details about the group’s structure, funding, location within the federal government or specific responsibilities.

“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump wrote. “Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!”

Trump said the government would still address harmful uses of AI through existing criminal and civil justice systems.

He also described AI as the next Industrial Revolution or internet and said the technology could eventually account for as much as 25% of the U.S. gross domestic product.

Trump said the United States currently leads China and other countries in AI development and said he intends to maintain that position.

He also said he would announce his choice for AI czar “in the near future,” adding that “only High I.Q. individuals need apply.”

The announcement comes amid growing debate in Washington and the technology industry over the pace and safety of AI development. Some technology leaders and researchers have called for greater safeguards or a slowdown in development, while Trump has rejected calls for additional restrictions.

Trump previously had an AI and crypto czar, venture capitalist David Sacks, who left the formal role earlier this year and became an external adviser.

The proposed AI Force would add another federal initiative to an administration that has already moved to expand AI use in national security. In June, Trump signed a memorandum directing the national security enterprise to accelerate adoption of advanced AI systems and strengthen related computing and talent capabilities.
