AUSTIN — Tesla has launched its Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas, making the autonomous vehicle available through its Robotaxi app as the company begins an initial rollout of the steering-wheel-free vehicle.
Tesla officially launched the Cybercab Thursday, with the first deployment limited to Austin. The New York Times reported that Tesla has 45 Cybercabs among the 314 vehicles in its Austin robotaxi fleet.
The Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals because Tesla designed it specifically for autonomous travel. The vehicle cannot operate as a conventional car that a person can manually drive.
Tesla’s broader Robotaxi service also uses Model Y vehicles and Robovans in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa. The company has not announced when it will make the Cybercab available in those other cities.
Tesla first unveiled the Cybercab in 2024 as part of its plans for autonomous transportation. The vehicle has a two-seat interior and a large central display instead of conventional driving controls.
Tesla does not currently sell the Cybercab to individual consumers. Instead, the company has opened an interest form for potential fleet buyers as it prepares to offer Robotaxi vehicles to operators that want to establish their own autonomous transportation networks.
Tesla has not announced when fleet sales will begin or provided a schedule for expanding the Cybercab fleet beyond Austin.
The company also has not announced a timeline for increasing the number of Cybercabs in Austin or deploying them in its other Robotaxi markets.
