BANGKOK, Thailand — Thailand will cut its visa-free stay for tourists from more than 60 countries and territories from 60 days to 30 days starting Sept. 15 as the government moves to curb crimes involving foreign nationals, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
The new limit will affect travelers from China, the United States and 27 European Union countries, among other countries covered under Thailand’s visa-free tourism program.
Thailand currently allows visitors from more than 90 countries and territories to enter without a visa for stays of up to 60 days. The program covers travelers from the Schengen area, China, India, the United States and several South American countries.
The government will maintain longer visa-free stays for some nationalities. Visitors from Peru, Brazil and South Korea will receive 90-day visa-free stays, compared with the previous 60-day limit.
The Foreign Ministry said the changes form part of efforts to prevent foreigners from abusing Thailand’s visa system.
Thai authorities have recently arrested foreign nationals over alleged drug offenses, sex trafficking and the operation of businesses, including hotels and schools, without proper permits.
Tourists affected by the new 30-day limit may extend their stays once, subject to approval from an immigration officer, according to a government spokeswoman.
Thailand has welcomed 20.9 million foreign visitors since the start of the year, a 3% decline from the same period in 2025, according to official figures.
