SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are investigating two deaths linked to Friday night’s severe storm as crews continued Sunday to clear widespread damage and restore electricity across the city.

Police said a 46-year-old woman died after rushing water swept her into San Pedro Creek north of downtown. Another person who entered the creek escaped safely.

Emergency crews found the woman’s body Saturday night after searching the area. The medical examiner is reviewing the circumstances, while police investigate the death as a possible drowning.

Police also are investigating the possible drowning of a man in his 50s whose body authorities found Sunday morning at Woodlawn Park.

CPS Energy reported 7,690 customers without electricity as of 9 p.m. Sunday, a sharp decline from more than 100,000 customers who lost power during the storm’s peak.

Crews repaired more than 100 downed wires overnight, removed or collected 290 fallen trees and restored 82 traffic signals, according to city officials.

The city extended the operation of six resilience hubs through at least noon Monday. The hubs provide cooling, electricity, device charging, Wi-Fi, basic supplies, medication refrigeration and separate areas for pets.

VIA Metropolitan Transit continued offering free rides to the resilience hubs. Residents can request transportation through 311 or 210-207-6000.

The city also extended its waiver of storm-related brush disposal fees through Sept. 5. The Bitters Brush Facility at 1800 Wurzbach Parkway accepts storm debris under the waiver.

Officials also scheduled an additional garbage collection Monday in the Five Points and Beacon Hill neighborhoods.

Several schools and universities adjusted their schedules because of storm-related outages and damage. Our Lady of the Lake University canceled Monday classes and closed its San Antonio campus, while San Antonio College planned to open.

San Antonio, South San and Edgewood independent school districts planned normal schedules Monday. Southwest ISD planned to open all campuses except Medio Creek Elementary and Sun Valley Elementary, which remained without power.

The San Antonio Independent School District said crews inspected campuses Sunday as CPS Energy continued restoration work.

CPS Energy Interim President and CEO Frank Almaraz warned Saturday that some customers could remain without electricity for several days because of downed lines, broken poles and fallen trees.

The National Weather Service said the storm caused widespread tree damage from northeast Bexar County through central San Antonio and into southwest Bexar County. The agency said preliminary reports indicated straight-line winds of 50 to 65 mph, with some areas reaching about 75 mph. San Antonio International Airport recorded a peak gust of 77 mph.

City crews continued clearing trees and debris from roads and public rights-of-way as residents cleaned up damaged homes and neighborhoods.

Officials urged residents to treat all downed power lines as live and operate generators outdoors and away from doors and windows. Residents can report nonemergency storm damage through the city’s 311 system and report property damage through the state’s iSTAT damage survey.
