SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Department of Transportation will begin work on portions of Loop 410 and US 281 in San Antonio, with construction expected to continue through 2029 and target congestion, safety and mobility along the corridor.
The project covers 4.3 miles of Loop 410 between West Avenue and Broadway Street and 2.7 miles of US 281 between Loop 410 and East Nakoma Drive.
Before construction begins, TxDOT will hold a public open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Walker Ranch Senior Center. Residents can attend at any time during the come-and-go event to learn about the project and ask questions.
TxDOT developed the project after a multiyear planning process that included a feasibility study completed in 2018 and public input.
The agency considers the Loop 410 corridor one of the 100 most congested roadways in Texas. The route connects with several major highways in the San Antonio area and provides access to San Antonio International Airport.
The project will remove seven ramps, with some relocated or reconstructed, and make lane changes along both highways.
TxDOT said the project area recorded an average of 3.7 crashes per day from 2014 through 2018, exceeding statewide averages for interstate and U.S. highways.
After construction, TxDOT expects the improvements to reduce crashes by as much as 40%, add access points, improve connectivity and cut travel times by nearly 70%.
