WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump on Monday backed FIFA president Gianni Infantino as the football chief faces criticism over allegations of a workplace affair and a failed private investment scheme.
Trump said FIFA would make a “terrible mistake” if it considered replacing Infantino, who faces reelection next March.
“FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. He described Infantino as “fantastic” and credited him with overseeing what he called the most successful World Cup.
“If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again!” Trump said.
Infantino has denied allegations of wrongdoing. FIFA has also defended its president, describing the criticism as part of a “concerted and ongoing effort” to undermine the organization.
Trump’s support contrasts with the position of US Soccer, which joined Canada Soccer and football organizations from Central America and the Caribbean in issuing a statement criticizing Infantino.
Infantino became FIFA president in 2016 and is seeking another term when the organization holds its election in March.
Other major football organizations, including the Confederation of African Football and South American governing body CONMEBOL, have supported Infantino.
The controversy comes as the United States prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico.
