New jalapeño recall hits Texas retailers amid salmonella outbreak

Taylor Fresh Foods is voluntarily recalling several guacamole, pico de gallo and salsa products containing jalapeños amid a nationwide salmonella outbreak, with recalled items sold at major retailers in Texas.

The recalled products include branded and unbranded ready-made guacamole, pico de gallo and salsa with best-by dates through Aug. 16.

The products were sold at Target, Walmart, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods locations in Texas and other states.

The recall follows a nationwide outbreak linked to fresh jalapeños that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recalled last week. The peppers came from Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributors primarily supplied them to restaurants and wholesale customers.

Taylor Fresh Foods said it has not received reports of illnesses linked to its recalled products. The company said it stopped sourcing jalapeños from the Mexican grower involved in the recall and will use alternative suppliers to fill orders.

Consumers who purchased any recalled product should throw it away and may seek a refund from the store where they bought it.

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, nausea and abdominal pain. Most healthy people recover within four to seven days, but the infection can cause severe dehydration or spread to the bloodstream, particularly among vulnerable people.

The jalapeño recall affects multiple states, including Texas.

The latest recall adds to recent food-safety concerns involving Taylor Fresh Foods. The California-based supplier previously identified iceberg lettuce as a potential source in a Cyclospora outbreak.
