WASHINGTON — The Trump administration announced sweeping new tariffs on hundreds of Canadian products, saying the duties are intended to counter what it described as discriminatory Canadian trade policies and protect U.S. industries.
The White House said the tariffs, which are scheduled to take effect in 30 days, cover more than 400 products imported from Canada, the United States’ second-largest trading partner. Officials said the measures are designed to “level the playing field” for American automobile, alcohol and dairy producers.
The tariffs apply to a broad range of consumer and industrial goods, including:
- Electronic devices such as digital cameras, smartphones and television monitors
- Clothing and footwear
- Beauty products and perfumes
- Essential oils
- Luggage and handbags
- Pet supplies
- Home and office furniture
- Paper and packaging products
- Plastic household goods
- Fresh-cut flowers and gardening supplies
- Toys, games and sporting equipment
The administration said some listed products may already be subject to separate import restrictions.
Energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals are exempt from the new tariffs.
The 30-day delay before implementation leaves time for potential negotiations between Washington and Ottawa.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Canada should respond if the tariffs take effect.
“If the tariffs go into effect, Canada should respond tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar,” Ford said.
Canadian federal officials had not publicly responded to the announcement as of Tuesday.
