HOUSTON — Houston Christian University announced Saturday that President Dr. Robert B. Sloan Jr. died on July 4, ending more than two decades of leadership at the institution.
The university announced Sloan’s death in a statement from HCU Board Chairman Ramiro Peña. The university did not disclose a cause of death.
“With the heaviest heart, I am saddened to announce the sudden death of HCU President Robert B. Sloan, Jr.,” Peña said in a message to the university community.
Peña said Sloan led Houston Christian University through a period of growth that included increased student enrollment, expanded academic programs, major campus construction projects and a higher national profile. He also said Sloan strengthened the university’s Christian mission during his tenure.
“The fingerprints of Dr. Sloan’s leadership will continue to be upon the success of HCU for generations to come,” Peña said.
The university extended its condolences to Sloan’s wife, Sue, their children and grandchildren.
The HCU Board of Trustees and the university’s executive administration said they will release additional information as it becomes available.
The university has not announced memorial arrangements or plans to honor Sloan’s life and legacy.
