AUSTIN — The Texas Longhorns football climbed into the top five of the 2027 recruiting class rankings Monday after receiving a commitment from three-star defensive lineman Jason Johnson.
Johnson, who plays at Atascocita High School, announced his commitment to Texas over offers from California Golden Bears football, LSU Tigers football and Vanderbilt Commodores football.
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound defensive lineman adds to a position group that head coach Steve Sarkisian has prioritized in recruiting. Johnson is the fifth defensive lineman or edge rusher to commit to Texas in the 2027 class and the second in the past week, following Tyler Alexander.
According to 247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brooks, Johnson has the ability to defend the run across the line of scrimmage and plays with strength at the point of attack. Johnson lines up as a 3-technique defensive tackle in four-man fronts and can also play 4i-technique defensive end in three-man fronts.
Johnson joins four-star recruit Kasi Currie and Alexander as interior defensive line commits in Texas’ 2027 class. The Longhorns have also secured commitments from edge rushers Cameron Hall, Jabbarius Garror and Derwin Fields.
Johnson’s commitment moved Texas to No. 5 in the 247Sports 2027 team recruiting rankings, trailing fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners football by less than one point. Texas A&M Aggies football leads the rankings, followed by Notre Dame Fighting Irish football and Miami Hurricanes football.
