MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala made an impressive main-draw debut at the HSBC Championships in London, defeating Zhang Shuai, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the Round of 16.
Fresh off her title-winning run at the Birmingham Open, Eala continued her strong form on grass courts. The 21-year-old recovered from an early 0-2 deficit in the first set before taking control of the match.
After a closely contested start to the second set, Eala broke away from a 1-1 tie and capitalized on Zhang’s struggles. The Chinese veteran committed 33 unforced errors, allowing Eala to dictate play and steadily build her advantage.
Eala closed out the match in dominant fashion, winning the final game without conceding a point.
The victory sets up a Round of 16 rematch against Iva Jovic, a close friend who defeated Eala in the first round of the French Open two weeks ago.
The win continues Eala’s upward momentum following her recent rise to World No. 33 in the WTA rankings and extends her strong start to the grass-court season.
