PHOENIX — Douglas Shepp McCain, the eldest son of the late Sen. John McCain, died on May 20 at the age of 66, according to an announcement posted on X by the McCain Institute.
The institute said Douglas McCain died suddenly. An online obituary also confirmed his death.
McCain served as a Navy pilot, following his father’s military background, and was associated with the McCain Institute, political campaigns, and Senate staff connected to John McCain’s career.
His sister, Meghan McCain, confirmed his death in a post on X, describing him as a “truly wonderful, joyful man” who supported her throughout her life.
She said he brought humor and conversation to every room and expressed condolences to his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp.
His cause of death has not been disclosed.
