LOS ANGELES — The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dominated the North American box office in its opening weekend, raking in an estimated $130.9 million. The animated sequel from Universal and Illumination Studios follows Mario, Luigi, and friends on a cosmic adventure to save Princess Rosalina, featuring the voices of Jack Black, Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Brie Larson.
Analyst David A. Gross called it “a sensational opening for the second episode in an animation series,” noting that family-oriented films are currently driving box office success.
The weekend’s other top earners included:
- Project Hail Mary – $30.7M (3rd week) – Ryan Gosling stars in the Amazon MGM sci-fi about a lone astronaut saving Earth from a dimming sun.
- The Drama – $14.4M (debut) – Zendaya and Robert Pattinson headline this romantic comedy about a couple unraveling before their wedding.
- Hoppers – $5.8M (4th place) – Disney/Pixar’s animated story of a young girl transferring her consciousness into a robotic beaver to protect wildlife.
- Reminders of Him – $2.2M (5th place) – Universal’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers.
Gross highlighted that audiences are responding positively to the current slate of big films, keeping moviegoing momentum strong.
