DALLAS — Dallas officials on Saturday marked the completion of street improvements on Medical District Drive, a major thoroughfare serving the city’s medical hub. The $31 million project widened the road, added bike lanes, improved pedestrian access, and enhanced connections to public transit, including Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Green Line and the Trinity Railway Express.
Dallas County District 4 Commissioner Elba Garcia, whose district includes the Medical District, said the project has been 18 years in the making and serves more than 3.3 million people annually.
Hospital leaders had previously raised concerns about narrow lanes, which the project addressed by adding wider access for vehicles, patients, and emergency services.
Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Jesse Moreno described the improvements as part of the city’s long-term plan to connect residents with the district’s three major hospitals: Parkland Hospital, UT Southwestern Medical Center, and Children’s Medical Center.
City transportation director Gus Khankarli said the next step will be upgrades along nearby Harry Hines Boulevard, including new traffic signals to improve access for first responders.
