Cardinal Jose Advincula on April 3, 2026, called on Catholics in the Philippines to pray for the end of the war in the Middle East, citing its impact on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), their families, and rising fuel costs.
Advincula delivered the homily during the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord at the Manila Cathedral. He compared the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross to the hardships faced by people affected by the conflict.
“His hardships are seen in every innocent life affected by the war. A clear example of this is what’s happening to the Middle East,” Advincula said, noting the destruction of cities and the loss of lives. He also highlighted the anxiety of OFW families and local workers struggling with higher oil prices.
Advincula encouraged the faithful to reflect in silence, sympathize with those affected, and pray for peace. “He calls us to be present with compassion. It does not have to be big, but just enough to listen and show that we care,” he said.
He also echoed the call of Pope Leo XIV for global prayers for peace, stating that through prayer, Catholics can share the love they receive from Christ.
