Floyd Mayweather Jr. said his planned Sept. 19 bout with Manny Pacquiao will be an exhibition fight rather than a professional match, meaning Mayweather’s 50-0 record will not be affected.
Mayweather made the statement Sunday during a meet-and-greet at an MCM store inside Caesars Palace, saying the venue has not been finalized, though the Sphere is one possibility.
Earlier announcements described the fight as a professional rematch that would be streamed on Netflix. Pacquiao had said he aimed to hand Mayweather his first career loss.
Mayweather said the exhibition is intended for entertainment and emphasized that both fighters would “be winners” regardless of the outcome.
The two previously fought in 2015, with Mayweather winning by unanimous decision. The upcoming bout has drawn attention despite both boxers being past their professional primes.
