HOUSTON — Travelers flying to Mexico from Houston are already experiencing disruptions following a surge in violence after the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho.

At George Bush Intercontinental Airport, one departure to Puerto Vallarta was canceled Sunday, along with three arrivals from Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Morelia. William P. Hobby Airport has reported similar cancellations. While other flights remain scheduled, officials caution that conditions could change rapidly.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott urged residents to follow federal travel warnings. The U.S. Department of State advises Americans in Jalisco and several other states to shelter in place due to ongoing security operations, road blockages, and criminal activity.

One former Sugar Land resident now living in Aguascalientes described roads near his home as blocked and said he is staying indoors for safety. Friends traveling to Guadalajara have not responded to his messages. “At first I was nervous and scared, but now we’re just hanging in and hoping everything settles down,” he said.

Travel experts recommend passengers check airline apps or websites for updates, know refund options, ask about change-fee waivers, monitor State Department advisories, and consider travel insurance. Families at Houston airports are concerned both about further cancellations and the safety of loved ones in affected areas.

Officials advise travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and review all federal travel warnings before planning trips to Mexico.
