MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed optimism about the future of Philippines-United States relations as both countries marked the 80th anniversary of diplomatic ties during the unveiling of a commemorative logo for yearlong activities.
Marcos said the two nations have bridged distance and differences through shared history and advocacies, adding that the anniversary logo symbolizes eight decades of diplomatic friendship.
“I am confident that this alliance will move forward with even greater conviction and commitment to the security, prosperity, and resilience of our peoples and of our region,” Marcos said in his speech.
This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Philippine-US Mutual Defense Treaty, which guides defense and security relations between the two countries.
“Any enduring relationship requires commitment and sustained effort, and we have certainly done the needed work,” the President said.
Marcos added that both countries continue to pursue opportunities through bilateral, unilateral, and multilateral channels while expanding cooperation into areas such as cyber and outer space.
As the Philippines prepares to host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summits and Related Summits this year, Marcos called for continued US support to the ASEAN community through strategic partnerships.
“And we hope to welcome President Trump once again in Manila for the ASEAN Summit later this year,” he said.
