The Philippine Coast Guard deployed personnel and vessels to intervene when Chinese ships confronted a Filipino fishing boat near Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea, where the incident occurred within the Philippines’ claimed exclusive economic zone, according to an initial report released by the agency.

Coast Guard officials reported that the Filipino fishing boat sailed near Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scarborough Shoal, when multiple Chinese vessels approached and engaged the boat in what Philippine authorities described as harassment.

The Philippine Coast Guard stated that its responding units moved into the area after receiving information that Chinese ships confronted the Filipino fishermen while they conducted their fishing activities.

The Coast Guard said its personnel positioned their vessels between the Chinese ships and the Filipino fishing boat to ensure the safety of the fishermen and to maintain the Philippines’ presence in the area.

The agency reported that its intervention allowed the Filipino fishing boat to continue its voyage away from the immediate vicinity of the Chinese vessels.

The Philippine Coast Guard identified the location of the incident as waters off Bajo de Masinloc, a traditional fishing ground for Filipino fishermen and a maritime feature that both the Philippines and China claim.

Coast Guard officials said they documented the encounter and prepared a report for transmission to relevant Philippine government agencies that handle maritime security and foreign policy.

The Coast Guard said it coordinated with local fishing communities after the incident to gather additional accounts from the fishermen on board the affected vessel.

The agency announced that it will maintain regular patrols around Bajo de Masinloc to monitor the presence of foreign vessels and to respond to any future incidents involving Filipino fishing boats.

Philippine authorities said they will use the Coast Guard’s incident report and supporting documentation to assess whether they will lodge a formal protest or take further diplomatic or legal actions.

The Philippine Coast Guard said it continues to remind Filipino fishermen that they may fish in waters within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone while advising them to immediately report any confrontations or unsafe maneuvers by foreign vessels.

Officials said the Coast Guard will review video, photographic, and logbook records from its responding units to establish a detailed timeline and sequence of events during the confrontation near Bajo de Masinloc.

The agency said it will share relevant information from the incident with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other maritime law enforcement bodies to support coordinated patrols in contested waters.

The Philippine Coast Guard said it will include the incident in its regular reporting on maritime activities in the West Philippine Sea and will brief national security and maritime officials on its findings.
