ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, announced her campaign for the U.S. Senate on Monday, aiming to represent Alaska in Washington after serving in the House from 2022 to 2025.

Peltola first gained national attention when she won a 2022 special election for Alaska’s at-large House seat and later secured a full term beginning in January 2023. During her tenure, she focused on fisheries, rural infrastructure, tribal issues, and energy development.

Her Senate campaign emphasizes continuing her work on federal policies affecting Alaska and expanding her statewide record. Peltola, an Alaska Native who grew up in rural communities, is also noted for winning under Alaska’s ranked choice voting system.

Republican strategists are preparing for a competitive general election, citing Peltola’s prior victories and name recognition. The race will follow Alaska’s open primary and ranked choice system, with the top four candidates advancing to the general election.
