San Antonio Animal Care Services to add veterinary hospital on campus

SAN ANTONIO — Plans to expand veterinary services at San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) are advancing, with city leaders set to receive a key update on Wednesday.

The proposal includes the construction of a new ACS veterinary hospital and renovations to the existing clinic. The project is estimated at $15.3 million and funded through the 2022 bond program.

City officials say the expanded facility is critically needed, as ACS currently lacks the capacity to properly care for the number of injured or treatable animals brought to the shelter. The new hospital would also allow the department to perform spay and neuter surgeries on site, improving efficiency and overall animal care.

Seven proposals were submitted for the project, and city staff have narrowed the list to one recommended vendor. While the City Council is not expected to award the contract on Wednesday, the audit committee will be briefed at 10 a.m. on the evaluation process.

The project is expected to be considered for full council approval later this month.
