Venezuela slams U.S. over sudden halt to repatriation flights

CARACAS — Venezuela’s government said this week that the United States has suspended flights used to repatriate Venezuelan migrants, a move officials described as harmful to citizens seeking to return home.

According to the Venezuelan government, the announcement came after U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on social media that Venezuela’s airspace should be considered “closed in its entirety.”

Venezuelan officials said the statement suggests further limits on international flights connected to the country.

A government spokesperson said the suspended flights had been helping Venezuelans stranded abroad and that the halt creates new difficulties for families trying to reunite.

Venezuelan officials said they are exploring options to facilitate the return of citizens despite the suspension and have appealed for international cooperation to resolve the issue.
