SAN ANTONIO — Three gorillas have arrived at the San Antonio Zoo ahead of the opening of its new Congo Falls exhibit in December, marking the first time the zoo will host gorillas in 35 years.
Andi, Merry, and Anaka were transferred from Zoo Atlanta as part of the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP). The zoo plans to house seven gorillas in a two-acre environment that blends three habitats and offers immersive viewing opportunities.
Tim Morrow, president and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, said the gorillas bring unique personalities and opportunities for conservation education. Congo Falls is scheduled to open on Dec. 13 at 10 a.m.
Gina Ferrie, vice president of Collections and Conservation at Zoo Atlanta, said the move allows the gorillas to become part of a new troop and reflects collaboration within the SSP.
