The Austin Independent School District board on Monday in Austin, Texas, approved a school closure and consolidation plan that will shut down 10 campuses starting next academic year.

District officials presented the plan as part of a long-term facilities and budget strategy addressing under-enrollment, operating costs, and projected student population changes.

Trustees reviewed enrollment data, financial projections, and building capacity reports before voting in open session. The vote followed presentations from district staff and comments from community members at the public meeting.

Austin ISD administrators said the closures will take effect at the start of the next school year and that the district will notify families, students, and staff about reassignment plans.

Students from the 10 campuses will move to designated receiving schools. Staff will work on transportation routes, class schedules, and support services before the school year begins.

Officials said the consolidation plan will reassign teachers and staff from the closing campuses according to district policies and staffing needs. Human resources staff will meet with affected employees.

The board directed administrators to prepare transition plans for each campus, including timelines for student reassignment, records transfer, special education services, and language support programs.

Austin ISD leaders said the district will provide information sessions, online resources, and multilingual communication materials to explain school assignments, transportation options, and available programs.

The district will study potential future uses for the 10 closed school buildings, including repurposing or leasing, subject to further board review and community input.

Trustees requested regular progress reports on implementation, including enrollment updates at receiving campuses, transportation performance, and staff placement status.

District officials said they will coordinate with principals, counselors, and support staff at receiving campuses to prepare for increased enrollment and orientation activities for transferring students.

The board’s approval followed earlier meetings and presentations in which staff outlined the criteria used to select campuses, including enrollment levels, building conditions, and program distribution.

District representatives said they will continue gathering feedback from families and staff during the transition period and will adjust steps as needed for the next school year.
