New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was shot and critically wounded early Sunday, Nov. 17, outside a business in midtown Manhattan, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ office and the NYPD.
Police said the shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. on West 38th Street near 7th Avenue. Officers responding to a 911 call found a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Emergency medical personnel took the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Mayor Adams’ office identified the victim as Jets player Kris Boyd.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, and police said the investigation remains active.
In a statement posted on social media, Mayor Adams said he was praying for Boyd and his loved ones. He noted that while shootings in the city have dropped to historic lows, officials must continue efforts to curb gun violence and protect young lives.
Boyd is in his first season with the Jets but has not played in a regular-season game this year. He was placed on season-ending injured reserve on August 18 after suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery. The cornerback joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to play a key role on special teams under head coach Aaron Glenn.
The 29-year-old has played six NFL seasons, including stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans. He played college football at the University of Texas.
Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips both expressed hope for Boyd’s recovery and praised his fighting spirit.
Police have not released information about a suspect or motive in the shooting. The NYPD urged anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
