Humble Independent School District approved a pilot program allowing select employees to carry firearms on school campuses to enhance security for students and staff, district officials confirmed.
Participation in the program is voluntary. Employees must already hold a license to carry firearms, pass a background check, and complete a psychological evaluation. Participants undergo eight days of training conducted in College Station.
Humble ISD Police Chief Solomon Cook announced that the department received approval to establish a training academy within the district. The police chief will issue final certification after participants complete training. Certified marshals must re-qualify every three to six months to maintain active status.
Texas law has permitted school marshal programs since 2013, but this marks Humble ISD’s first local implementation. The district plans a gradual rollout that will take more than a year to finalize operational manuals, complete training cycles, and assign the first marshals to campuses.
Officials said the initiative will complement existing campus police presence and add an extra layer of security.
