HOUSTON — The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees who continued working during the recent 43-day government shutdown will receive a $10,000 bonus.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made the announcement at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Noem recognized TSA officers for maintaining airport operations during the shutdown, highlighting Rico Walker, a 20-year TSA veteran and National Deployment Force member, who took additional shifts, and Ashley, who managed work duties while attempting to purchase her first home.

The bonus program aims to acknowledge the efforts of tens of thousands of TSA agents and staff nationwide who assumed extra responsibilities to keep airport security functioning. Employees will receive both back pay and bonus checks in the coming days.

In addition to the bonuses, Noem outlined improvements to enhance travelers’ experiences, including veteran and family lanes, expedited security measures, and new screening technology that allows passengers to keep their shoes on.
