San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones announced that more than $1.6 million has been raised to support 11,000 households in Bexar County affected by food insecurity.

The aid will be distributed through H-E-B gift cards valued at $150 per household.

The initiative was launched to assist families struggling with reduced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Distribution plans for the gift cards will be released next week.

Mayor Jones said approximately 130,000 households in Bexar County face food insecurity, underscoring the need for continued community support. She added that the effort demonstrates how collaboration can address the growing demand for food assistance.

Major contributors to the fundraising include USAA, Spurs Sports & Entertainment, and Valero Energy Corp. Their participation reflects the private sector’s role in addressing local food access challenges.

Mayor Jones expressed gratitude to the donors and emphasized that the initiative represents an important step in helping vulnerable families. She noted that while the campaign provides immediate relief, more long-term efforts are needed to combat food insecurity in the county.

The funds will help families purchase essential food and supplies through the gift card program. City officials said the initiative shows how government, businesses, and the community can work together to respond to local needs.

Mayor Jones encouraged residents to continue supporting similar programs, highlighting that collective action remains vital in ensuring that all families have access to basic necessities.
