New York Attorney General Letitia James is set to appear in federal court to plead not guilty to bank fraud charges. The U.S. Department of Justice issued an indictment in October.

Federal prosecutors allege that James facilitated transactions involving misrepresented financial records that misled banking institutions. The indictment does not identify dates or name other individuals.

James, elected as attorney general in 2018, has been a central figure in high-profile legal actions involving financial and government institutions. She has denied wrongdoing and claims the case is politically driven. Her legal team plans to contest the indictment.

Proceedings remain in early stages. Federal criminal cases often extend for months. A conviction could lead to fines and a prison term.

James continues to serve as attorney general while the case moves forward. The outcome carries potential consequences for her career and for the state’s political environment.
