MANILA — The Climate Change Commission (CCC) has reported that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) allocated nearly half of its ₱754 billion climate-tagged budget to flood control projects, underscoring the government’s focus on managing climate-related disasters through infrastructure.
According to the CCC’s latest analysis, a substantial portion of DPWH’s climate funding has been directed toward structural measures like dikes, drainage systems, and other flood management initiatives.
These projects aim to protect vulnerable communities from the rising frequency and severity of flooding driven by extreme weather events.
The DPWH’s focus aligns with national strategies on climate adaptation, particularly in mitigating the immediate threats posed by climate-induced disasters. The department continues to work with local governments and stakeholders to implement flood control solutions nationwide.
The CCC noted that the report offers insights into current spending patterns and provides a foundation for reviewing and improving climate finance strategies. It also called for better integration of climate resilience into broader infrastructure planning to maximize long-term impact.
