MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Francis Escudero announced on Tuesday that the Senate will discuss the Supreme Court’s ruling nullifying the impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte on August 6.
The decision to review the 97-page ruling, excluding concurring and separate opinions, was made during a Senate caucus to give senators ample time to examine the document, which was filed by five or six additional Supreme Court magistrates.
Escudero said the Senate aims to thoroughly understand and assess the legal reasoning behind the court’s decision before determining the next steps regarding the impeachment case.
The ruling, which declared the impeachment articles void, has drawn significant attention due to its implications on the Vice President’s political standing.
Senate leaders are expected to provide updates following the discussions, which could have major consequences for the ongoing political landscape in the Philippines.
The scheduled review reflects the Senate’s commitment to informed decision-making as it navigates the legal and political dimensions of the situation.
