HOUSTON, Texas — David Adickes, a celebrated artist known for his monumental contributions to public art, passed away in Houston on Sunday at the age of 98.

Born in Huntsville, Texas, Adickes’s early life shaped his passion for art, which he later honed through travels across France and other countries. His journey as an artist also included serving in World War II, an experience that deeply influenced his creative work.

Adickes is perhaps best known for his towering 67-foot statue of Sam Houston, a landmark that stands as a symbol of his mastery in large-scale sculptures.

His impressive body of work also includes the famous “We Love Houston” sign and a series of busts depicting U.S. presidents. Additionally, Adickes created sculptures of The Beatles, further cementing his reputation in the public art space.

Throughout his career, Adickes’s works became iconic fixtures in Houston, contributing significantly to the city’s artistic landscape. His legacy continues to inspire artists and art lovers both locally and nationally.
