The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has confirmed a data breach that exposed the personal information of nearly 300,000 individuals.

TxDOT discovered the breach during a routine security check and took immediate steps to secure the affected system.

The agency has since launched an investigation to assess the extent of the incident and is working with law enforcement to identify those responsible.

The data compromised includes sensitive personal information found in crash reports. TxDOT has not yet specified the exact types of data accessed but stated that protecting personal information remains a priority.

Individuals affected by the breach will receive written notifications by mail. TxDOT has also set up a dedicated hotline to respond to inquiries from those impacted. The hotline will operate during regular business hours and will be staffed with personnel trained to provide assistance.

TxDOT officials said they are implementing enhanced cybersecurity measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The agency is also working with cybersecurity experts to review and improve its current security protocols.

In the meantime, TxDOT is encouraging affected individuals to monitor their personal accounts, place fraud alerts if necessary, and stay alert to signs of unauthorized activity.
