The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) reported the arrest of three individuals involved in selling smuggled frozen fish products in Batangas City. The operation took place on February 6, with NBI agents detaining the suspects during an entrapment operation.

Authorities said the operation was initiated following a tip-off regarding the transportation and sale of smuggled fish. The NBI’s Batangas district office led the entrapment, resulting in the seizure of 100 boxes of frozen fish. The agency had received credible information about certain individuals involved in this illegal activity, which prompted the law enforcement action.

The arrested suspects are currently undergoing investigation to determine the extent of their operations. NBI officials are looking into possible connections to a larger network of smugglers operating within the country. The aim is to dismantle the network and prevent further illegal trade activities.

The NBI emphasized that smuggling poses significant threats to local businesses, the economy, and the environment. The agency reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement of laws against smuggling and illegal trade. The crackdown on smuggling activities reflects broader efforts by the NBI and other government agencies to protect legitimate enterprises and maintain market integrity.

Local authorities in Batangas City are cooperating with the investigation. They are assisting the NBI in gathering evidence and identifying other parties involved. The city’s officials have expressed concern over the impact of smuggling on the local fishery industry and economy. They are working closely with national agencies to address these challenges.

The smuggled fish products seized during the operation were identified as staples in local markets. These include various types of frozen fish commonly consumed by residents. Authorities are concerned about the implications for food safety and consumer protection.

Government agencies involved in the investigation are also considering measures to ensure that seized products are handled appropriately. These measures aim to prevent any risk to public health and safety. Proper disposal or redistribution of the confiscated goods is being planned in accordance with relevant laws and guidelines.
