HOUSTON, Texas– Approximately 16,000 residents in Houston are at risk of being removed from the housing voucher waitlist, according to the Houston Housing Authority.

The authority has announced that these individuals must respond to an upcoming email to maintain their place on the list.

No new housing vouchers have been issued since December 2023 due to funding limitations.

The Houston Housing Authority provides affordable housing assistance to low-income families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.

The housing voucher program is critical for many residents, allowing them to access housing that may otherwise be financially out of reach.

The halt in processing new applications has been in effect since late 2023. The upcoming email aims to streamline the waitlist and confirm continued eligibility for those still in need of assistance.

Residents on the waitlist must reply to the email to confirm their continued interest in receiving a housing voucher.

Failure to respond will result in removal from the list. The email will provide instructions for updating personal information and verifying current eligibility.

The housing voucher program helps subsidize rental costs in the private market, with recipients contributing a portion of their income toward rent and the voucher covering the remainder.

This assistance helps individuals and families secure higher-quality housing in neighborhoods that may otherwise be inaccessible.

The Houston Housing Authority has urged residents to check their email and respond promptly, stressing the importance of keeping contact information up to date.

Support will be available through the authority’s website and customer service for those needing assistance with the process.
